Damn! First year I've missed out on this for the last 4 calendars. Guess this just fell off my radar.

    Safety Share for the Day

Constant vigilance. I saw a crazy thing the other day that could have been a serious bummer for me if I had been half a block further up the road. I was on a narrow "arterial" I drive frequently. It's a very dense, highly residential area with a lot of tree cover so there are often kids and...

    Sumotrack

I just found this and it is crazy how similar your build is to mine. Doing a rephased motor with the speedster pipes, rear monoshock conversion and front fork replacement with dual discs. Mine's all in a hundred pieces now but slowly coming along. Anyway that's a great looking bike. Nice work!

    Installing fog lights, tachometer? (automotive)

I would stay away from fog lights for the same reason. the beam pattern on fog lights is way different and not what you want for a headlight. your visibility will be reduced for one. also there's usually a max height you are permitted to mount them, because otherwise they can blind other drivers.

I need advice ASAP on a 650xs PURCHASE tonight!!!

I paid $500 for mine, not running, no title, but the VINs matched. it had been unregistered in WA long enough that they just took my bill of sale, notarized release of interest from the PO, and issued me a new title and plate. Its a project for sure but there is not anything fatally wrong with...

    Kent Money's First Build - "Beginner's Luck"

I really like the look of that seat/fender. I've been trying to figure out what to do with mine, that gives me some good ideas.

Review of some parts purchases from MikesXS

I've bought a ton of stuff from Mikes, mostly little bits and pieces. had problems with only a few: * clutch lever - didn't fit with 650central cable, does not have enough pull/adjustment to properly disengage clutch. stock lever worked fine. * stainless brake lines - they claim some degree of...

    continue restoration or sell?

I picked up my xs650 for $500 and have probably spent near double that in parts so far. my valve adjustment snowballed into a complete engine teardown. if I was in it for the money I would have ditched the thing months ago. I don't think of it as an investment, but as an education I'm paying...

The dreaded phone call. Having a great day until the phone rings...

Yup. I just read about a guy on a Puch (moped) who wrecked with a car at an uncontrolled residential intersection not far from my house a few days ago. police blotter said he had a 3/4 helmet and "sustained substantial facial injuries", though not life-threatening. also sounded like he had been...

    cam guide NOT AVAILABLE anywhere?

yeah i had the same thing happen with powersports. ordered it, and then days later they sent a generic email saying it was on backorder. their customer service takes about 3 days to reply to emails and it was a right hand not knowing what the left is doing kinda thing with whether it was in...

    Removing Clutch Centre Nut

here is my zero dollar clutch nut removal tool, handy if your engine is already out of the bike: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5234/7204177876_b022e90487.jpg 1. spin drive sprocket onto shaft if it's not still on there. doesn't need to be tight. 2. put transmission in gear 3. wedge appropriate...

    Stuck/Stripped Clutch bolt

mine were a serious pain. the heads were visibly rusted, and even with soaking in pb blaster and using impact, I only got one of the six to come loose. for the rest I dremeled a groove in one side of the screw head and cracked them loose with a flat-blade screwdriver and a hammer.

    MSF class tomorrow!

just took the MSF class and got my endorsement a couple months ago. the first ride i had on the street I was nervous as hell but a couple weeks later I'm doing way better. still sticking to short rides when traffic is light. +1 on Motorcycling Excellence and Proficient Motorcycling. both books...

What level of mechanical know how and tools do I need to replace my cam chain guide

well it doesn't matter much because they just told me they are backordered from Yamaha with "no estimated ship date", so it looks like they can't get them either.

    intake valve depth off

the saga continues. got my valve spring compressor today. the other three valves came out really easy, but the odd one with the wrong retainer absolutely will not budge. the valve itself moves, but it looks like the keepers are completely wedged in there and don't want to come out so the spring...
