    Anybody vintage racing?

Hey Guys, Anybody out there doing vintage racing with their XS? I've been racing an R6 for years now, but at age 50, I'm thinking the time has come to take my vintage butt out of the fast kids class, and into vintage racing. I was looking at the rule book for AHMRA and thought the XS...

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

Yeah, I'm sure nothing is switched. 18 spokes fit perfectly, 18 spokes don't fit. I ordered a set from Buchanan's today, and I'm sure all will work out fine. Jay

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

As you can see, this spoke is just not headed towards the center of the rim. All 18 look just like this. Also, when comparing the photo from 5twins of his outer, to the photo of my outer, you can clearly see a difference in degree of bend, and length of the spoke after the bend, to the head...

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

Yep, I used that one as well. As you can see from my pictures, I did lace them up just like they did. I have taken the wheel apart again, just to confirm that the problem is simply the angle of the bend is not sharp enough, nor is the length of the bend to the head long enough, to allow the...

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

Well the problem is I'm confusing which is which. I think confusing in name only, not placement, however. Sorry about that. Yes, the pictures above show inners installed, with no problems. The outers, with their 90 degree angle, just won't allow the spoke to angle towards the center of the rim...

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

One of my inner spokes One of my outer spokes. 90 degree bend at the most, and no longer than the inner. Yes, they are powder coated, but I completely cleaned out a couple of the holes to see if that was the problem, and it didn't help. Looking at your spokes, I'm more inclined than...

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

This first picture is just to show how I started. The second is showing that one spoke from each flange is next to the valve stem This picture shows that the rim is centered. This picture shows how far off the spoke is from the hole.

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

5Twins, Thanks for the quick reply. I can't post a picture right now, but that is exactly the way I have the first 18 spokes in. I have also double checked that I haven't mixed any of the spokes up. On about the 3rd try, I just tried putting the 90 degree (or inners or long, what ever we want...

    18" rear wheel lacing problems

Hey Guys, I have a (I believe) stock 18" rear rim, with drum brake that I'm trying to re-lace. I have the Mikes XS spoke set 19-0060 that should fit. When lacing up the "outers", everything is fine. The spokes fit, the angles are correct, the rim is centered on the wheel. Life is good. The...

    Mechanical advance problems

Hey Guys, Just an update on the advance rod problem. I went to a local Yamaha dealer, picked up an OEM advance rod, and no more problem. The Mikes advance rod is definitely too short. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Jay

    Mechanical advance problems

Yep, I installed the 3 bushings that come with the Mike's XS kit. It is a Mike's advance rod, and it does seem as if it is too short, so that when the Pamco rotor and spring weight cam nuts are tightened, it just snugs up to the head and becomes fixed to, as opposed to rotating in, the cam. Jay

    Mechanical advance problems

Hey Guys, I've got an 81 that I'm installing a Pamco unit in to replace the TCI. The problem is that when it's all installed, and the nuts on both sides of the advance rod are tightened, the advance rod no longer spins in the cam, and the weights no longer move. What's up? Thanks, Jay

    Rim swap questions

Hey Guys, Looking to run Avon AM22 and AM23 tires on my 81 XS. It has the stock cast wheels on it, so they have to go. Don't like the look of the cast anyway! My question is, will any hub that I can get from EBay work with the rims that I can get from Mikes XS? I know I have to account for...

    custom wheels

Yes, it is a cafe racer of sorts. The intent is to ride it on the street most of the time. I would like to take it to the races with me every once in a while too. I think it would be a blast to beat all those SV 650 guys on my old Yammy! I do mean 190/55 rear, as I race my R6 on the U.K. made...

    custom wheels

Yes, I know I could just put a complete R6 front on it (I have enough R6 parts laying around to build 2 more) I just don't want to. My race club (Moto Series) wont allow modern front ends in the "vintage" class. Also, I don't want that "new-old" look. I want it to look original, I just want a...

    custom wheels

Hey Guys, I have an 81 xs650 that I would like to fit with custom wheels so I can put some good tires on this thing. Would like to do some track days and vintage racing with it. I now race an r6, so if I could get wheels made to fit my old race take off's, that would be great. Swingarm...
