    New 1981 SH Project

Hello everyone and I wish all of you a Happy Christmas. Picked up a rolling frame 1981 SH and I am getting to start a new build. Not real sure where its going to end but, that is part of the fun of it. My first item that I am in need of is an engine and I would to get some ideas on what years...

    1972 Resto/Retro Project

Hello Bob!!!!!!!!!!! I was on the other day and looking for you but it kept returning a message that there was no one by your name and I was getting worried that something had happened. Yes, I am getting ready to start a new Yamaha 650 project that I just picked up. I found a 72 that is...

    Mailman’s XS2 a full on restoration

One had a 750 kit and with both pistons banging down it created a lot of pressure. I modified the vent box and it pretty much stopped it. On the other one, I had used some cheap seals and when they were replaced with OEM they stopped leaking. You can tell if its the case pressure by...

    Mailman’s XS2 a full on restoration

Hey there mailman. I had a couple of 650's that had the same leaks and I found out that I had enough extra back pressure in the crankcases that it was blowing past my seals. Just a thought. David

    Mailman’s XS2 a full on restoration

Bob: I wanted to let you know that you have done a great job of restoration and that your documentation is outstanding. Sometimes I feel like we are loosing younger and inexperienced people because they feel that they might be belittled or made fun of in forums like this. You have certainly...

    Mailman’s XS2 a full on restoration

The bike is looking great!!!!!! For future reference the 1972 Yamaha LS2 left hand electric control switch was the same as the XS2. The only difference was that the LS2 was raw aluminum and not painted and had 1 more wire which was not needed in the xs2. Hence, a different part number which...

    Mailman’s XS2 a full on restoration

Hi Mailman: I have enjoyed following your journey!!! I do have a question though. After going through all the work on the upper end (and the rest of the bike) why have you decided not to break the cases and check the transmission and main bearings and do the final cleaning inside where all...

    My latest resto/retro completed

Hi Fred: Thank you for the compliment. The trim strip was my doing. I always look for some way to put my "signature" on each of my projects. The stock 650's did not have this.

Finished up my latest build and thought I would share. It began as a 1977 XS650D. Sad, lonely and left out in the rain. It ended up as a 1977 XS650D with a couple of mods. Shiny and happy Now she is headed to her new home in Lost Wages, Nevada.

    Dual front brakes

650skull: Just noticed that the info you sent was the 77 Canadian parts catalog. I wonder was the dual brakes offered in Canada and Europe only in77?

    Dual front brakes

Thanks 5twins and 650skull for the info. I did find this in the 79 parts catalog but I thought there was an earlier tech bulletin that covered this. I am being questioned about an old advertising add that pops up on the internet and talks about the 77 model having dual disc brakes. I know it...

    Dual front brakes

Fred: Thanks for the reply. I know its not hard but just looking for some Yamaha specs and info. I finally found the set up offered by Yamaha in the 79 parts manual which shows all the suggested parts and individual numbers with and exploded view. Was just looking for the actual tech...

    Dual front brakes

I see that this topic is discussed a lot but don't find the answers I was looking for. If my rememberer is working correctly ( which has been getting worse) in 1977 Yamaha came out with a Parts/Tech Bulletin regarding adding dual front brakes. In this bulletin were all the parts and diagrams...

    1972 Resto/Retro Project

I used Aviation Stripper. Available at the paint supplier. I used it because it wont harm aluminum when you remove clear coat.

660: Great color combo. Great looking bike! Reminds me of the European release paint scheme.
