First of - Merry Christmas to all.
I am starting work on a 1980 special. It has sat for a while with no oil in it. Front breaks were dry as a bone,no cables, carbs were of but intakes covered up to keep stuff out and the more general stuff where previous owners have started then stopped...
HI all,
I picked up a couple of xs650 as projects. The one I'm working on is a 79 and has sit for quite awhile.
Setting the cam chain on this one is interesting. The PO had the adjuster nut almost right in, I adjusted it out so the rod is flush with the end but when turning the motor by...
Hi all,
Can the stock points and coils run of a pma and the rec/reg with 3 yellow wires in and red and green out? or do i have to go to fully stock set up. Tried to attach an image but photobucket aint working for me today.
Its a xs2 with only headlight and stop/taillight.
Thanks.
Thanks everyone,
I moved the plate and had the same results, a new atu unit will be on the way as soon as I can but I think I'm just going to have to go right back to the start and go through everything again - lost count of how many times that will be now.
I'll post up if I have sucess and...
Hi all,
I did the test of connecting the ignition system to a separate battery...I've been working on it again today with a separate battery connected up and had the same results-great spark if I test the leads against the motor and it did fire up and run for a bit but then went back to not...
Hi Pete,
Thanks, you also helped me out when I first was setting this bike up.
I did the above test again and found it wouldn't fire so I checked for spark by leaving the spark plugs in but removed the right hand side lead, then removed the cap and held the lead against the motor - great spark...
Hi,
I have cleaned and checked the carbs but that was a little while ago so should look there next. I did think I would get some sort of bang by spraying ether/starter direct into the carbs though even if they do need anther clean etc?
Hi all, Just putting this out there to try and solve ..I have a '72', pamco, PMA, pod filters.
If I test for spark with the plugs grounding to the engine I get great spark...but as soon as I put them back in and try to start it up its got nothing - fuel is there and timing and pamco all set as...
Thanks Pete.
CDNTX650 - so how do you install it 180* out?
I didn't touch the advance and it was running on the points system but at this stage I'll re-check anything :)
Hi all,
I've become really stumped...I installed the above on my '72', have good compression, fuel, really good spark, auto advance seems all ok and all pins are in place but the bike will not fire up. Every so often a bit of a back fire if I spray starter into the carbs but that's it?
A...
Hi all,
I'm a bit stumped about this at the moment.
I have simplified the loom so there is only a hi/lo beam indicator and no running lights. The headlight was working fine, then started to only work sometimes, then not at all. There is power going right up to the headlight but if you...
Hi all,
Where do people recommend buying clutch friction plates?
Where I've looked either don't have them or are constantly out of stock.
Thanks
I'm in New Zealand if that helps in anyway :)
Hi All,
First of thanks for all the advice - it help me a lot to narrow down the problem. In the end a mate who has been a bike mechanic for years popped over to have a look. When I rewired I put the 'tell' wire on the wrong side of the key, now everything seems to be doing what it should :)
Just got another rotor of a friend and I'm getting the same reading 00.0, I've triple checked i'm doing it right going by this so looks like that ones shot too :(
Thanks RG and Leo, I re-checked with 0.004 (no 0.003 on mine?) and it doesn't move. I took the cover of just to see how it would react then and it only moves towards the rotor nut.
I rechecked the reading of the rings and with a probe touching each ring I get a reading of 0.00 and if I touch...
I have just done the thin feeler gauge test - seeing if it slaps against the generator cover - what I found was that the feeler cauge (0.0015) slapped against the cover even before the key is turned on?
I have simplified, cleaned up and tidied up the wiring loom as one/all of the PO's had had a...
