Are the 80-83 model year motors the same? My bike is an 83 and I have found a 80 motor but want to make sure the ignition and such is the same and it will bolt up. Im pretty sure it will but just making sure. Thanks

I get what your saying now. I'm by no means mechanically illiterate but i also don't rebuild many motors. I can get a crank assembly for a pretty decent price but need to know what year cranks will fit in this motor. Will a different crank cause any balance issues if i were to swap it out...

Wow sounds pretty crazy so what your saying is one of the flywheels was out of balance? Im assuming your talking the 4 disk looking deals that make up the crankshaft? Can i buy a new crankshaft assembly and swap them out? Or do i need to get mine looked at. Is it gonna cost more to get it...

Every time that i have changed the oil out of it the drain plugs have a small amount of shavings on them but i didn't think it was enough to worry about maybe it is.

nj1639 i have not yet checked the bottom strainer or the right side oil strainer. I have however had the whole side cover off and have drained the oil to do this, i didn't see anything in the oil on either occasion do i still need to pull the filters?

Looking for a motor for relatively cheap that runs with no bad noises like the cancer i currently have. Anything that has the same ignition as an 83 motor will work as long as i can swap it out. Thanks

I haven't checked that yet but when i pulled off the valve covers there was some shredded up what looked like and felt like silicone or gasket material could have been pieces from the cam chain guide though i don't know it was built up around the rubber o-ring that seals the little caps...

Alright i found that video on you tube it is an 83 xs too. The guys on there are saying it is the one way gear that is used for the electric start since i will not be using electric start can i just remove it? I think that is my sound

so you guys think it is the bearings on the crank that are bad and i need to tear the motor down? I'm gonna wait for some other guys to chime in on this and see if i can get a firm diagnosis. yes i have no tach, the cable is just pulled out of the holder on the right side case. Man this sucks...
