I went to look at a potential new bike tonight, right away a few things jumped out at me. Listed as a '78 SE, 36,000kms.
1. oversized fins on cylinders, big bore kit??
2. progressive rear shocks? any good?
3. new mufflers, any idea on quality/brand?
Let me know what you guys think.

The engine also has a tag (sticker) also with...

Been reading on here for the past few weeks now and I've found a real head scratcher for even the veterans. My title says I have a 1977 XS650. The Vin # is 447-709xxx. However, the bike is a special which wasn't produced until 1978. Supposedly. From what I have found it has not been altered in...
Found this O-Ring in my bead blasting cabinet, and I have no idea where it came from. I took a quick look through some schematics but nothing popped out at me, hopefully one of the experts here can help. So far I've blasted lots of engine parts, forks, brake calipers and some other chassis odds...
Why does this clutch boss have the wire retainer and the 2 rings? I'm rebuilding my clutch, and after having to find a second assembly I noticed a difference between them. This one has the wire and extra 2 rings. My other one just had a solid edge for plates to sit on. Also there is a note in my...

I've been doing a lot of reading and searching the forums, but I have a rudimentary understanding of this geometry stuff. My eyes start to cross after a while.....information overload.
I have a '75 XS650 and I'd like to upgrade the front end. I have access to a good machinist, welder and a...
I just bought a 1974 xs650 with a notarized bill of sale only in Georgia. Does anyone have experience with registering a non-titled bike in Tennessee or anywhere. I'm looking at Certification of Ownership form and taking it to county clerk to get it registered. Any help?

So my bike is a '74, though it has had various tins and other peripheral parts replaced prior to my getting it. The hollow threaded stud broke on the right rear blinker, so I need to either run one down or get a whole unit. My question comes from looking at the various exploded views and pics...
Picked up 1980 XS650.
Looked up the frame numbers (2F0 ######) and confirms what registration says, it as 1980.
When look up the engine number (S650 ######) appears the engine is a '72-'73 from a TX650?
To anyone's knowledge engine was never swapped?
Think this could this be something that...

Hi guys, I'm trying to do a VIN history check and only have the 9-digit VIN ('79 SE)
I checked the Model Identification sticky, as well as referring to this information here http://viragotechforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=35708 and even tried to "expand" the 9 digit to a full 17-digit VIN...
So i came into ownership of what i assume to be a 1982 xs650, but I'm not really sure how to exactly tell.
PS sorry if this is posted to the wrong spot, and I'm also super new to mechanical work in general so any help is much appreciated.
PPS i can provide more pictures if needed.
Most posts here are about how to fix some kind of problem with their bike.
It wastes time to have to ask for details on what year/model/modification/etc. the bike has before we can even start in with the derision, mockery, bad advice, bigoted opinions and the occasional helpful tip.
How about...
I have a 79 xs650 that is completely dismantled, I'm trying to size my rims for tires. I have measured the rims and makes me wonder if I'm doing it right. Thanks.
