In the process of reconditioning my '79 Special, I've taken the starter apart to check brushes and bearings. Both good, which is both good and bad: I was hoping worn brushes or dry bearings were causing my electric start woes.
Next step is to eyeball the entire starter gear train and...
Hey, saw a bobber and fell in love. I have been considering buying a bike for a while and just got a job which allows me to do so (I'm 21). I was originally thinking of just buying a newish harley or triumph but would love to get my hands dirty and be able to really call it mine. What I am...
curious as to where the starter wire enters the case, my bike has been converted to kick only, and by the way everything else "custom" on this thing, they just cut the wire and left the starter. anybody with a pic of where the power wire to the starter enters, PLEASE send it or post it, ive...
I know this is a silly question... but can I replace the starter gear without taking the engine out of the frame?
I have the new gear and all of the parts needed.
Thanks
I read elsewhere that if you run a kick only setup you can use a considerably smaller battery. Can anyone else verify this? Or have experience with it?
- trouble shooting
- hope this can grow organically over time … comments and suggestions will hopefully correct, complement, improve and extend this
- an engine is basically an air pump
- add fuel, timing and spark, you get an internal combustion engine
- break this system anywhere and you...
OK, Here's the bike:
1978 xs650SE "Special"
POD Filters (Carbs ARE re-jetted, new manifolds, float levels, etc...)
New Headers/Tapered Mufflers from MikesXS
Still running points (replaced last year)
All other MODS (and ther are a lot) are primarily cosmetic.
OK, Here's what happened:

So i replaced the starter bendix with mikes kit and for some odd reason its still spinning through. I followed the direction exactly and all the washers, nuts, etc. when exactly where they came from. I also remembered to relocate the spring clip just as the directions said. Maybe its not sitting...
hi,
found a little oil below the bike this morning and looked underneath to see where it was coming from. its on the left side behind the metal clutch/gear casing. the oil was coming from a metal plate that has 5 or 6 bolts around it. there is a picture of it in the haynes manual page 21...
So I've been working on my 1980 special and have gotten to a point where I thought I was ready to start enjoying a few rides. Today I put new plugs in. Started it up and let her warm up. Had to break away a bit for dinner and afterwards came back out and started her up again, a few moments...
I got my motor somewhat taken apart. I removed the clutch basket and the #4 gear with all the associated parts.. I did this to perform the e-start fix by bending the clip. I have decided to keep it kick only. I need to reassemble the engine. can I just leave all those gears and springs out?
Well, Sparkx says you can't really kick start a three-phase perm mag alternator. Really?
My starter is making bad noises so, I guess, I'll be looking at that fourth gear, huh?
Ive got an 81 xs650 with a starting issue. Cant get the electric start working. I tore everything apart, assuming ill need the #4gear/clip/spring, but thats not what im concerned with. I had it running with the kicker, but now it will not engage to start the motor. Not sure what is going on...
XS650 E-start
- by now youve probably figured i dont like XS650 starter motors…a lot of energy, time and money went into creating the ‘männer’ machines we all like so much…these looked the part, were reliable, didn’t leak oil and, like everything else, had their weaknesses…the starter motor...
Went about the seemly easy task of replacing my starter today as the 75'XS I got runs great but the starter is fried. Got a replacement starter but cannot figure out how to get the rear bolts off it ?/???? I saw some guy actually bent a cheap wrench in a vise . Is there any other way? Does...
