starting woes

Hi there gents. Bike was starting beautifully and then suddenly starter just spins. In the 'oh oh' album I've posted a pic of a gear on the left side of the motor which just spins freely and can be moved back and forth maybe 10mm. Is this normal? Or do I just need a mikes starter...
