    New to me basket case.

I just acquired a Yamaha chop. It was mostly assembled. After disassembling I noticed the “custom” hard tail was out of plumb almost an inch. I lopped off the rear section and purchased a tc bros hard tail. The cover bracket on the backbone where the top section of the hard tail Mates to the...

Question about lifting/stabilizing bike for hardtail

So I plan on hardtailing my 79' xs650 soon. I'll be installing a TC hardtail and I'm trying to figure out the best way to lift and secure the frame so I can remove everything but the engine for cutting the back half off and tack welding the hardtail in place. The issue is that if I use my...

What did you weld or what do you need to weld today...

I have been welding for a little over 10 years. My first welding project was a set of intercooler hard pipes for a turbo Supra project back in college. They turned out terrible. I ended up having to cut all the pipes apart and have a friend help me get all the pinholes out. I figured...

    Welding gas question

Today I went to a different welding supply place, because the one I used to go to really irritated me. I'd asked about getting a bottle of Argon mix to replace my pure CO2. At the old place they told me the adapter would be "about $75" and didn't even check - just assumed the price was gonna...

    Welding table almost complete

I posted in this thread a while ago about the steel plates I got to use as a top for a smallish welding/fixture table. Well I finally got around to making a stand so I thought I'd show you guys what I've been up to. The top is only about 32" x 42", but 1-1/4" thick so it weighs about 525lbs...

what a difference an excellent welder makes?

so, for some reason my TV ended up on American Chopper and I'm watching an episode where they're interviewing and testing possible new employees. And they had to do some butt-welds. I gotta believe it's the equipment! they must have top of the line welding machines. It shows them (I guess...

    TIG or MIG?

Just wondering if it is a MUST to tig weld the hardtail. I have worked with a few buddies who mig welded theirs, and they came out fine, but I am reading on here so many people who blast weld jobs that arent tig welded. Just wondering cuz I have a great Mig setup, and dont want to deal with...

welding question - must all welds be watertight?

Obviously if you weld on a tank, it will need to be able to hold liquid - but what about other non-tank welds? This probably isn't important, but here goes: I welded a large coped bung, vertically (sticking up) to the backbone of my frame to use as a rear tank mount. Did the welds once...

had a scary little fire while welding

Yesterday afternoon I welded a large (for 3/8 screw) coped bung to my frame backbone, to use as the rear mount for my gas tank. Welding went very well. Nice looking welds all around except for the very front portion - which I will redo tonight. Anyway, I was careful to cover the lower portion...

    could old tank 'splode?

Just read a bunch of threads on gas tanks, leaky petcocks, etc. Nothing leaking here - my issue is an ancient tank. Not sure if it is a Wassell replica, or a real one or just some kind of old chopper peanut tank they used to sell. Got it from a Brit bike guy who was unloading chopper...

final rear chop fender mounting method

You'd think a flat trailer fender would be the easiest thing in the world to mount up and have look half way decent on a hardtailed frame, right? Wrong. Well at least for me. Tried a couple of different methods and always ended up unhappy with how far the fender was from the tire and with the...
