Has anyone successfully converted a XS 16 inch rear mag wheel to dual disc? The intention is for it to be used as a front wheel for a sidecar.

Not that I know of. However, assuming its a disc mag wheel, it shouldnt be too difficult. You will need a lathe or a friendly machine shop to machine a spacer to bolt to the current sprocket bolts with sunken heads and have holes drilled and tapped for the disc to bolt to along with a centralisation lip.

There's also the bearing issue. The rear uses a 20mm diameter axle while the front uses a 17.

Thank you for the replies.
I have a plan that should work, but thought someone else may have already done this.

Just need to do some more research as to what callipers to use then work out off sets.

The axel /bearing should not be an issue as the front end will be made to suit.

In the meantime there is a snapped off sprocket bolt to remove. I will try and document the modification as it goes and if successful post the info.

Managed to get another disc fitted to the 16 inch mag rear wheel.

Started with an old Yamaha disc with a bolt in mount from an earlier XS, I think RD 350's had the same set up.

Measured the distance from the existing disc to the rim edge then worked out how much had to come off the sprocket hub to allow for a mounting ring and give the same off set.

The cap screws are counter bored and counter sunk to give clearance for the calliper mount.

The cadmium plated bolts have metal locknuts and the caps screws are going to be further drilled so that cross lock wiring can be done.

After the discs were drilled I got the local engine rebuilder to grind the gouges out and they came up like new.

The earlier disc was thicker than the XS but after resurfacing they are almost exactly the same thickness.

After getting the earlier XS disc the rest was pretty straight forward.

I'm late to the party with this but if I were attempting to use a 16" rear wheel on the front of a sidecar rig I'd build an Earles fork to put it in and incorporate a backwards XS650 swingarm into the design.

Fredintoon, Thanks and yes we were always going to use a leading link front end.

gggGary Sorry for the late response but have been busy in the workshop. Here are some photos of the rear wheel used as a front. We pulled it apart tonight to paint the frame, which should be done over the weekend, trying to get to a meeting at the end of the month.
