17" supermoto wheels

Hi everyone!
I surely agree that 17" wheel can look cool, and offers great tyre choice.
But, as pointed out before, gearing definitely can become an issue. Although I went for an 18" rear rim on my new wheel, the smallest sprocket for my Talon KTM MX hub is 36, forcing me to use an 18 tooth front sprocket. Also, having to compensate for the smaller diameter rear wheel by using longer shocks, will cause other issues (chain rub...) My very best advise is to search for posts by "mule" (Richard Pollock) and "grizld", they seem to have covered most potential problems wit this kind of mods :)

But there MAY be a way around the gearing issue in itself. The chain rub is another matter.
If using a MX hub (or any other hub requiring a bigger sprocket), it should be possible to machine a sprocket carrier/adapter , allowing smaller sprockets to be used. Using a 520 chain would make this easier. Then the wheel has to be laced with the rim offset towards the sprocket side, to make tyres and chain both line up. This is only possible if the hub is narrow enough, and the swing arm and brake disc allow this. Surely possible, but not easy and not cheap. But still cheaper than a higher primary gear set........
I believe I could have done this with the Talon hub I am using, and a small (like 200 mm) rear disc and a compact caliper, with the stock XS swing arm.

Good luck with your project !

my buddy's bike on 17's, motalanna swingarm and I think it is a gsxr front end

A bit concerned about the rear brake.....Otherwise a nice "work in progress":)

What rear brake?!?!? As far as the gearing goes I have CRF450 wheels and hubs. I can get a 39T rear spocket for them and I have found 18T for the front, giving me a 2.16 ratio on the chain. Stock is 17T front and 34 t rear giving a 2.0 ratio. less than a 10% differance, closer to .80 differance. But your tire is also shorter, Of course whose going to be doing alot of highway riding on a cafe-street tracker anyway. JT makes a 37 tooth and that puts you at 2.055 ratio

Supermoto 17's front and rear with RMZ front end and XT 750 swingarm. 130/90's each way max for this set up.

Nine years later my project finally complete. Bike is registered and road legal for at least next 2 years.
I took way longer and costed me way more than I could have imagined.

Happy that it is finally finished.

A long road, but congrats on staying focused. Many of us know what kind of dedication it takes to produce a great end result, like you achieved. I was on the 7 year plan, so I know what kind of focus it takes. Money, time, dedication and the love of the XS!!! And street legal!!!

Another monkey wrench, that tries to deter a build from finishing. Here in Pa. they wanted lights, fenders, signals and 2 stupid little reflectors on the plate to make it street legal. Then I have to wait 4 months, for the Antique plate to arrive. Go through all the BS of inspection, then the state says O.K., now you need NO inspection, because it's an "Antique"!!! But you can only ride it one day a week. . .
