For Sale - 1972 Yamaha GS650 (XS650 w/factory 750cc engine)

I have a 1972 Yamaha GS650 (XS650 with factory 750cc engine) for sale. It is one of only 200 650's manufactured in 1972 with a 750cc engine to meet AMA requirements to be classed as a 'production' 750 bike to allow it to be raced on the flat track circuit by Kenny Roberts. The serial number has been verified by Yamaha and fits in the 200 sequence.

The bike only has 6500 miles on it and is in excellent condition. I am the second owner and bought it from the dealer that sold it originally in 1972.

This was a very rare bike when it was sold and is even more unusual today having survived and remained in almost new condition.

I am asking $15,000 but will entertain all offers.

Wow,wish i'd just went straight to bed 2nite/2day,after work. I only know of 1 of these monsters,and the rest of a boring old story,was 200 it or did the folks that said lets do it,keep 1or2 for here-say? VERY,VERY, Desirable twin.

Whats the sequence? i have a couple of 72,s you never know.
 
Gonna try to relive the 70's & try to chat with a couple old friends from the day.I'll pick a tired old brain or two and see if the 200 plus 1or2 was real or good ole b-s .Regardless,the bike you have looks gorgeous.Its on my mind,only to look!Good luck!Somewhere a REAL collector with cash will invest in that.
 
The sequence was GS650-102651 thru GS650-102850.
A couple of these have turned up on E-bay and we all know how credible some sellers on there can be.:mad: The pictures I've seen of the displacement numbers on the cylinders were obviosly a restamp. The cc was a stickout while the 750 was a stamp in, like someone ground off the 650 then stamped 750.:shrug: Why would Yamaha sell a 750cc bike but call it a 650, why not call it a 750? Why not call it a GS750, that would clear them with the AMA and give them another model to sell on the market.

This bike is for real as I also have one. I bought mine from the original Yamaha dealer. I was there at the dealership when it was delivered new from Yamaha. The frame and engine have matching FACTORY stamped letters and serial numbers and have been verified with the Yamaha dealer and Yamaha Corp. in Buena Park Calif. The serial numbers on the frame and engine begin with GS650 instead of S650 and the only other obvious difference is the cylinders have "743" stamped in. The reason for this is Yamaha did not cast new cylinders for only 200 bikes. They just installed 750 big-bore sleeves in stock castings, removed the cast-in "653" and hand stamped "743" on them. The rest of the motorcycle is exactly as any other 1972 XS-2 650 motorcycle. The serial number sequence is GS650-102651 thru GS650-102850. Although there are probably thousands of 650s with 750 big-bore kits installed, if the frame and engine numbers begin with S instead of GS it is not one of the 200 issued by Yamaha. I sold my GS650 that I restored for 6K thru eBay a months ago. Mine did not have a 750 kit. Good luck.
Just noticed this was a very old post.
 

All 200 GS650s came with 750cc cylinders installed. If your bike was a true GS650 but had 650cc cylinders then someone removed the 750cc cylinders and replaced them with 650cc cylinders. I still have mine and I know of one other guy that owns one. Check your frame and engine numbers. If it is stamped S650 then it is a standard XS650 that came with 650cc cylinders. If it is stamped GS650 then it is 1 of 200 XS650s that was delivered to dealers with 750cc big bore cylinders.
