73 rear wheel on 79 swingarm

hey guys I'm trying to convert from mags to spokes.My xs is a 79. has anyone put a 73 rear wheel on a 74 and up swingarm ? i've read on here the axel is shorter on the pre 73 but other than that. will it fit my 79 swingarm using my 79 axle?

Yes, it should fit right in. You may need the later right side spacer though. It's wider due to the longer axle.

I believe the right side is thicker also, so you will need both.

sorry for the slow response life got in the way again. thanks for the help. so will the spacers from a mag work or are they different for a drum ? i'm assuming james meant the left spacer ? so i will need both sides.

Taking a look at the parts diagrams will help you understand what's needed. The caliper bracket acts as the spacer on your Special. You will need an actual spacer instead since the caliper is being eliminated.
