79 Special II RestoCustom "Doomy"

I guess you could cut the plug off the RLU connection but it easily tucks down behind the battery box out of sight.
Thanks 5twins. I know you tend to modify your 78E in ways that can be reversed back to original someday.
This XS is just cut up enough that it will never go back to original. I've left that plug hanging out on the left side where it is in "no mans land" currently. My rear fender is hard to take on and off now. Suppose that inner fender could but I'm going to tuck wiring away nicely hidden upon proving it all works.
Hopefully

Motivation ! To clean out the tank and rebuild the single vacuum petcock. Had to swap&switch a few petcock components out of the two that I have to end up with this hopefully reliable petcock. It has the 90° fuel outlet so it will take a creative fuel line routing to feed both BS38's.
Im onto more fun things too such as buttoning up the left side engine cover after all "last" adjustments to the clutch etc.. foot pegs on. It's getting parts on it !
More wiring progress later today coming. This liquid tape is cool all over but takes a day to dry.. patience required for a red head

I may be slow but it just keeps getting better. While adding 2500cc of Castrol MC oil I just couldn't get past the dry ugly of a club stock XS kick lever. Since I have a few , (idk why anymore), to choose from this one found a home here. It tucks in much more nicely and is lighter too...
Rectifier mount & wire still supposedly happening here..
:lmao:

Rectifier mounted. However the spades are not weather protected in a now exposed location to be behind a custom side cover. I only have one rubber shield left in my stash.
Hardware run calling for better ? And a fuel line Y, and more stuff
;)

Chrome ! Chrome tank badges were in my mailbox today.
Thanks so much Jim. Chrome is like CatNip to me and I'm feeling real good this evening lol
Didn't find a fuel line "Y" in this whole city yet.. nor those electrical rubber sheaths for the wiring. 10 hour days leave little shopping time but every single day there is some kind of progress ..
Appreciate the support on XS650.com !

You're welcome. Glad you're happy with 'em. :D
As far as the 'Y' fitting... unless it's line routing or aesthetics you're concerned with, a 'T' will work just fine. The flow rate at 40-50 MPG is so low (about a gallon per hour) there's no need for a Y.

Friday garage time is mostly wiring. Finally made my own spade connector insulators for the WindyNation rectifier. Being very particular does take up time but I am very pleased with the wiring mods happening. The original 7 wire light checker is now in a box, the RLU in the box, the original rectifier in the box. Learning the proper jumpering required to remove these items was a huge help. ;)
Anyway some pics as I can move forward on things like the breather brake booster valve and plumbing mod. The headlight bucket wiring is still looking at me over too...

Jim & Machine,
I had the opposite problem, fitting TM/RS 34 carbs to my 77 D, with dual petcocks. The flatslides have a single 8 mm fuel barb, while my dual petcocks have 6 mm barbs. After going to around 4 different local automotive and hydraulic shops, it was ebay time. I quickly found a Chinese vendor that had brass "Y" fittings with 2 x 6 mm inlet, and 1 x 8 mm outlet. Or vice versa. Cheap as f. , perfect for my purpose, and arrived in less than a week. Bought 2 or 3, just in case, cannot remember exactly.

Saturday 79 time. It snowed here ! Sheesh..
Did plug in the whole headlight bucket of bliss !
Did finish mount the great crankcase breather valve.
Did route 2 fuel lines for the spring startup.
20200314_101906.jpg

Did more custom bullet ends at the rear turn signal wires.
;)
Well here is the pic proof lol

There's no need to be adding extra hoses to that new breather valve. Just one longer large hose and no hose on the smaller output end will suffice. Poise the valve over one of your new pod filters and if any oil or oil mist does come out, it will just be absorbed by said filter. The UNIs are oiled for use anyway so a little oil from the breather isn't going to hurt them .....

The brake check valve fit went very well but stubbornly.
It is at a set length to vent straight down in front of the carbs. The down vent hose is extra long for now.
I did wire in the solid core plug leads and NGK 0 res caps. So basically... this bike is wired !

Well, I guess you're gonna do what you're gonna do, like putting high bars on a so-called "cafe" bike, lol.
