Advance Rod Side Play

How much sideplay should there be in the advance rod. I can move it back and forth almost 2mm, and while the bike is running I hear it occasionally tapping from side to side randomly. Is there a washer I'm missing or something? I'm running a pamco ignition, can't remember if the old points cam let it rock this much. Replaced the tensioner slippers last year, so I'm pretty sure that's where the noise is coming from.

I put some quieter mufflers on last week, and now I'm hearing all sorts of new noises.

You're not missing a spacer or washer. Some of the rods have quite a bit of freeplay. I guess the replacement from Mike's can have even more than a stock original. 2mm is a lot. I shimmed mine down to like .005"-.010".

I added a steel washer behind the pamco aluminum disc that still allows a bit of freeplay and that took care of the noise. I'll have to remember to check that it doesn't lock up when it gets hot and expands. So far so good.
