I found this old newspaper classified advertisement from early 1973 from a dealership where I bought a bike.
Actually I can no longer remember what a Hodaka Ace looks like although I remember the name. Same with Bultaco. Both companies no longer.
But the mighty Yamaha lives on.

Yup - it sticks in my mind that I paid about:
  • $900 for a 1975 Honda CB360T in around 1977
  • $900 for a 1975 Yamaha XS650B in 1978 ( I traded in the Honda plus about $200 at the time)
  • and I sold the Yamaha back to the same dealer on a trade for a new leftover 1979 Suzuki GS850G in 1981 (he gave me $1500 against the Suzuki - but of course, he may have simply jacked-up the price on the Suzuki.... )
Ahhh - those were the days.

I remember the first time I paid over $2000 for a motorcycle. 1981 Honda XL500. I was disgusted by that outrageous price, but I REALLY wanted that bike.

In a lifetime of doing stupid shit, very near the top of the list was trading that XL for a 1978 naked Goldwing. Didn't know it at the time but the 'wing had a bad alternator. Got hosed big time on that deal.

Actually bought another XL500 many years later and kept it for a year or so before I discovered that at 40-mumble, I was too old to be farting around with dirt bikes.

In today's dollars, that'd make an XS1 or XS2 worth about $4,700 based on annual inflation. Sounds good to me!
