So I have a 79 xs650 I'm am going to be goin with pod filters and aftermarket dual pipes and was wondering where I should start out for jetting sizes

Raise the pilots one or two (to #30 or 32.5), raise the mains one or two (to #137.5 or 140), and lower (lean) the needles one step. Set the mix screws at 2 1/4 turns out and fine tune from there.

On your carb set, the needle is retained in the slide using a snap ring so you'll need a suitable pair of pliers to remove it. If you happen to have the right angle pair (part #35-0009) that MikesXS sells for MC work, they work perfectly, almost as if they were made specifically for the job.

Stock needle setting for your carb set is the middle (#3) slot. Move the clip up to the #2 slot. That will lower the needle in the slide and lean your midrange mix. This is required particularly on your carb set when you increase the mains .....
