Just wondering if any of ya have had your bikes to the track. If so what were/are your mods and what was the time it went in the 1/4 ? I know these were about mid 13 sec bikes out of the box, full weight. Would figure that shedding 200 lbs almost would make a noticeable decrease in times. Just curious.

never been down the track, but raced a few low 13 second cars on the back streets. Got them buy a couple cars (at 6,000 plus feet). The guy I bought it from says it has a cam. I brought cone filters, and straight piped it. Of coarse I retuned the carbs, and I haven't counted, but i beleive its stock gears also. I think it will run in the high 12s low 13s here (with a good rider of coarse) lol

Most of us couldn't care less how quick our bikes are in the 1/4 mile. As long as they run well so we can ride them is good enough.
For those who want to have a 1/4 racing bike get something that is better for that than an XS650.
Leo

Right....I'm curious too. Always drag raced cars but haven't brought the xs to the track. I'd imagine low 13s is about right after weight loss and mild power gains.

Some of us might be curious Leo. Why do people mod these bikes? Big bore kits, carb changes ect? To get more power out of them, enjoy them even more. Nothing wrong with asking or even take them to the track. Different strokes for different folks.

I just like taking money from mustang drivers lol. No one seen the old motorcycle coming that night. But thats actually why i bought a old bike, not to fast.... and it looks and sounds good doing it.

I'd be very surprised if my "mostly" stock bike would even crack 13s It's just not a very quick machine, although they were respectable back in the day. The torque to weight ratio sucks by modern standards. My SV650 will eat it's ass with a side of bacon and beans in a 1/4 mile and I don't need more than 3 gears. My EX500 was much quicker as well.
Those that "think" they know how quick they are need to go to the strip and be humbled by reality, or ride ANY 500-650cc modern "standard" twin and realize that THOSE are anywhere from high 11s to low 13s out of the box.
Big difference in performance.
As the OP said, shedding big weight makes a difference, but I'd be very surprised if any more than 3 or 4 of you actually has a bike that is 200 pounds lighter than stock. The meat just ain't there fellas.
Guesswork numbers mean shit.
And, I also agree with Leo, I don't give a crap how quick it is. I can brag plenty enough by the fact that my 34 year old machine gets up and goes, nevermind how quick it might do it.

Again to some of the guys going '' ride the bike be happy, yada yada'' Of course this isn't the bike to turn into a drag master, neither is Volkswagen beetles, but people do it just because. Im not arguing that point at all LOL. I am asking to see if anyone has taking a bike in particular ( hardtail), dropped a ton of weight, went down the old 1320. A friend of mine took his hard tailed XS and weighed it, for shipping reasons. It weighed 285ish IIRC. That in it self is making even better power to weight.

Just for fun, I've been collecting and compiling some 1/4 mile times/speeds officially published in cycle magazines, strictly for stock vintage & modern 4-stroke vertical twins and V-twins. Highly questionable and debatable, since rider size and skill is a significant factor. Enjoy...

Twomany didn't know you raced haha Got any pictures.
I have raced for over 40 years and the truth I never seen a xs650 at any track I raced at.
Was never advertised as a race bike like others but with a 130lb rider and 100 lbs off bike I don't see any reason it could not break into the 11 second range. Now to give you a thrill I am in North Carolina on vacation and stopped by one of my last year hayabusa motor builds just to say hi and see how the motor is running and Glen the guy who owns bike showed me last months time slip at a test session 1/4 mile time 6:97 et at 207 mph now that's flying. Just wish my old bone could get on and make that pass LOL

G'morning DaddyG! Yeah, I tried my hand at drag racing, motocross, dirttrack, flattrack, trials. Not good at any of them, haha.
Thinkin' too much about the machine, and what I'll have to fix when I break it. So, stuck with mechanikin'.

Coupla old pics of the time, lay-down gas rigids with fuel-in-backbone, nothing with me. I'll try to dig them out. Big cameras with film back then, inconvenient, seemed unimportant.

I'm like Rip-van-Winkle here. All I know of bikes and racing is from the '70s. Wake up, and find you guyz doing incredible times and speeds.
Getting into the 9's was the big thing back then. And, with strange multi-engined, wierd piped contraptions, that blew up...

I never saw a legit road test of a 650 in factory stock form getting any more than very high 13's. Most were low 14's. It would take serious weight reduction and engine tuning/mods to break 12's. Anything faster is not going to be streetable and engine life would be crap.

I think there was only one report that got 13.8 out of the box most reports were around 14.3
I have got 12.18 from mine at 110mph, I have 750 JE pistons megacycle 250 30 cam with after market valves standard size, head has been ported and the combustion chamber altered, biggest problem I have is I'm over 200lbs there is someone in the UK that is running around 11.5 second quarters at 116 mph his has 750 Wiseco pistons a ground cam ( not hard welded ) and mild porting but he only weighs around 150 lbs,
I'm hoping to be in the 11's sometime but if it can get there with me riding is another thing

An SV650 has 15-18 more HP in stock form and is 100 lbs lighter. The newer bikes are not as overbuilt as the older bikes were. I believe the XS650 is around 170-180 lbs just on the engine. Some of the newer sport bike engines are 50-60 lbs under that, and that's only the motor.
