Backfiring

Have you check the spark timing with strobe lately? When does the backfiring occur? Have you checked voltage input @ the coils? Is the fuel perhaps stale?

Thanks. You've given me things to look at.
Fuel is fresh. Backfiring occurs on deceleration
Set timing with strobe light, from your suggestion, and it is good
Will look at coils.
Been thinking about electronic ignition. any recommendations? Tri- Spark?

Back firing on deceleration can be due to a blocked pilot jet or jets. Carb cleaner, blow through them. Possibly even remove the pilots to clean them properly. If there's detritus in the float bowls, see if you can fit a fuel filter.

I agree, if there is good voltage to the coils (R/W to Brown = battery voltage), you may even want to try a larger pilot jet 45>47.5>50 to see what results.

I would check the exhaust for leaks ..sucking in extra air via ejector functionality ( Not sure if it is the correct English )
