I'm doing a "top end" on my '82 XS-650 and have an aftermarket gasket set. The gaskets look like pretty good quality but I'm not sure if a sealer like "Gasgacinch" or "Yamabond" should be used on the base gasket, or not. I believe that if an OEM gasket is being used, no sealer is required (but I'm not positive about that either). I need to here from you guys who have actually had experience with this situation.

you don't have to do it but you might as well, it can't hurt!! get a tube from an auto parts store. i forget the brand at advance auto, but use the grey one. it's around $5

actually, it *can* hurt. There are drains in the bottom of a couple of the stud holes, and if you block these, oil leaking past the rocker arm end tubes has no place to go, and will find somewhere to leak out. I suppose you could be really careful, but it's a flat mating surface, quite wide, and under no pressure. No need for sealer.
