MY 72 xs 650 runs rough around 1/2 throttle and will backfire & pop when i let off. im wodering could the carbs dirty,need an adjustment, or need to be sync'ed ? HELP A NEWBIE OUT !!!

Ya, go to the "carb" section in the tech page. Read it all. 1/2 throttle pop would probably be a lean jet needle setting BUT, you need to adjust cam chain tensioner, valves, timing, then carbs. In that order! First thread, first post, first link is the carb guide. www.amckayltd.com/carbguide.pdf

and install baffles if youre runnin' straight pipes. That should help with the backfire-ing
