Hello Everyone, Im new here. Im trying to build me a bike. It seems to run really well and it starts on the first kick without the Mikes xs air filters. Put the filters on and it floods bad in just a few kicks. The man that rebuit the carbs said he set the clips down one on the needle for use with headers. I dont pretend to know but I bet there someone here does. I would appreciate it if you would let me in on it.
    Thanks,

some of the pod filters have a lip on the inside that blocks the air jet of the carb, which carbs do you have?

Checked out the carbs. the needle clips are in the third position. So i just put them back together. I noticed both intakes had a hairline crack so I removed them both and found they had a bunch of cracks in them. This dont explain flooding but best get new ones to eliminate air leak down the road.

Since the needle clips are in the 3rd position would the next thing to look at be the O-ring for the needle seat?

Why do you say it's flooding out, is it a sound you hear? Is it a dry popping sound, or more of a wet sputtering sound? Also, if you pull the pods off, it will run, slide them on, and it won't?

Talk about an unexpected change. I got a new set of cab holders from Mikes XS and a set of gaskets and vac caps. Damn those carb holders are tight. It was easier to put my nobby rear tire on than to put the carbs in those holders.
The flooding problem went away and it starts with one kick with the filters on. Just one problem, it backfires erratically out the right exhaust. It will sit and idle for a minute. and then backfire. It might backfire 3 or 4 times at idlein a row. You might rev it up and it will do fine. You might might see a foot long flame.
Ive got this Xs Garage carb guide. Gonna glance through it to see if I can find anything about Backfiring.

Im almost ready to ride this beast
Ready for inspection this week . Im gonna ride it if I dont get then backfiring fixed.

I am going to be the bearer of some not so good news. The carb holder's from Mike's do not tolerate any fuels with ethanol in it. They disintegrate in no time. They have been a hot topic around here for a while. Someone posted a site for some others that are fit for use Here in the US, you do not state where your from, so, I just wanted to give you a heads up. Look in the tech pages, or the business pages, they might be in there.:yikes::wtf:
Wouldn't that piss you off if after all that work your carbs fell off?

  11. google for JBM Industries for the good carb holders.

I believe that Mike got rid of all those holders and the new ones he sells now do not have that problem.

I am having the same problem with my XS. It runs good for a while, then starts backfiring thru the left pipe. I think I have tracked it down to coil problem. When its cold I get nice blue spark. But after it runs 5 minutes its output is weak and yellow.

I will let you know if a new coil fixes the problem, I thought I had some old coils in the garage but I could not find them so I will have to order one from Mikes.

It does sound like a lean pilot circuit in that carb. The passages are tiny, so any residue from stale fuel will cause problems. That's where i would go again. Also check to make sure your exhaust is clear. Your running the stock exhaust, right? The stock header is known for collapsing, there are 2 pipes on the header, inside & outside. If you have an Aggie marble, (the big one's) try to see if it will go thrugh the pipe, if not collapsed pipe.
Mike's ad still reads that ethanol fuels will cause damage to the holders.

The carbs are bs38's and they were just purchased as totally rebuilt. I guess I can handle pulling the bowl off and checking it out. As for the exhaust all I have are the head pipes right now. I have a set of Triumph glass packs to put on it but have not installed them yet.

Hey Mikes XS I want my money back! It is true I did not pay much attention to the warning. Hell I dont even remember the damn warning. What this amounts to is you got stuck with a bunch of unusable intakes and your little "warning" gives you an out " well I warned them" so you dont have to give people their money back. But you and I now know that all gas has at least 10 % ethanol in it and there is no way anyone can avoid these carb holders rapid deterioration there by taking away any high ground you may claim Sir! Just give me my money back so I can got some from JBM and I wont talk about you among my friends.
