BS34 compatible petcocks

This may have been answered in another thread but I just couldn't seem to find it. There is soooo much info to wade through! Haha

Anyways, I have an '80 xs650 special. I will be chopping the bike eventually and I'm planning my attack. I was browsing through tanks and I noticed that they seem to all be either 1/4" or 3/8" NPT fittings. I know my tank has a vacuum petcock but my question is, do my BS34 carbs NEED this vacuum petcock? Or can I use a different one?

No, carbs... any carb doesn't care how the petcocks are opened. Use vacuum, manual... whatever you want.

If your retaining the vacuum manifolds the tubes need to be capped off if the vacuum petcocks are changed to manual......Or the bike won't run or start

That's exactly why I'm trying to plan for as much as I can BEFORE I get into it.

Personally, I do not care for Vacuum petcocks. Ditch them and put on a manual shutoff kind.

Agree with Azman - some people have good luck with the vacuum petcocks but many people find that they leak unrelentingly. The manual variant seem to work more reliably - BUT - you do need to shut them off when you park the bike.
