Bushyboy's build thread

@Jim well now you had me second guessing so I went to research and even I don't know what the filter was meant for specifically. It does look similar to a rotax filter I saw on ebay. On the K&N website I can't seem to find it even using the style and dimension. It does seem the triumph crowd uses them on their bikes; Mine came off a 2004 Triumph Speedmaster and seems you can find them for other Triumph models.

As far as air turbulence goes from the K&Ns, I don't think the length matters, it's the pleated element style. If you experience break-up in the upper midrange, say in the 4 to 5K range, under heavy throttle applications, then it could be the filters causing it. You must test for this using heavy or full throttle in that RPM range or it probably won't show.

I didn't experience any break up while riding last week. I did have an improved throttle response and a deeper exhaust note. Plus I am digging the look of the filters instead of the air box. The only thing I had to do was adjust the air/fuel mixture screw a little bit, but my tune was still good from the 2-into-1. To get the mixture right for the 2-into-1 I had to tune the break up at the upper mid 4 to 5k range so maybe that’s why it’s still good to go.

These CV carbs are quite forgiving and will mask over minor jetting flaws unless you push them hard. Obviously, you're not going to be driving around like this normally, giving the bike full throttle, but it's needed for testing the jetting.

Another great ride around ka’ena point and north shore today. No issues with the K&N filters throughout the ranges. Got a few good shots for the memory book; enjoy!

Knocked the dust of the old girl today after two weeks in the field. Ran like a top no issues. It was such a beautiful day; sunny and around 75 degrees. I’ve been itching to tear the engine apart to add a little performance; bore the jugs to 78mm, but unfortunately the compression is still good with no leaks or slapping of cam chain. May be a while since Yamaha’s are so reliable.

So since I made it a year with my XS650 I decided to run a tally of how much I have spent to date on my bike build. Who ever says building a cafe racer is cheap should be slapped, lol. So the total spent without tools or fluids is $4070 and if I deduct parts I have sold then to total comes to $3325. The NADA value for my bike is $4945 in excellent condition; which it is not, and $2715 for very good condition. I guess at least I am somewhere in the ball park, but you can't put a price tag on the hours of enjoyment that the XS650 has brought me. I think I should destroy this tally before my wife finds it, and keeps me from my next performance project.

Wow looking good. The knee pads and seat look good. Where did you get those eBay ?

Thanks! I got the tank pads from China; if you read previous comments above you’ll find the eBay link. The seat was made by motolanna I believe for a SR400 originally. Some XS650 builds op to cut the rear hoop but I like the rigitivity and most older bikes had the rear hoop exposed. I may fabricate a cover one day who knows.

In need of a few opinions, because I can’t make up my mind. Side over or no side cover?
