I've got a 78 XS650 special that came with a hideous, 8 inch deep, side-latching seat that kills the look I'm going for on the bike. I posted a thread a few days back and got some excellent help identifying a seat I'd taken a liking to - having now found the source and decided on a seat model, I figured I would seek wisdom from the more experienced on this forum :wink2:.

I already know that I'll have to chop the rear end of the frame to accommodate the bulb on the back of the seat, which I'm not worried about - the part that has me confused is what's acceptable / the best way to mount the seat I've chosen, and how do I mate the upholstery pan to the seat itself?

The seat I like the most is 6" at the front end (which lines up pretty nice with the tank) - then 8.5" at its widest point (which leaves it sitting on top of the frame rails, so I'm thinking I may have to make some sort of pan / riser that attaches to the frame that the seat can mount to?) 11" Seat pan, with an overall length of 24". The upholstery pan comes as a separate piece.

The upholstery pan doesn't have a photos link, so here's a link to the seats...

It's the DUCSSS2UP item.

Any advice / suggestions would be appreciated, as the seat has always been the thing I've wanted to change on the bike looks wise. :D.

I'm going to make some nice aluminum clamps to go around the smaller frame rails and give me places to bolt to for my seat, maybe you can find something like that?
