Hi guys,
I suspect I know the answer but has anyone managed to change the cam chain tensioner & guide on a 1981 model without removing the engine from the frame.
Is is possible to remove the head, jack up the barrels and access the 4 retaining bolts on the tensioner bracket?
Can the barrels be removed by taking out the studs and lifting off the pistons?
I know it sounds unlikely but it would be easier if the crankcases could stay in the frame for me.

Once you have the engine out you can apply a racing trick for easier engine work. Strip the top end to the cases.
Use a Dremel with a cut off wheel to cut slots in the top of the 8 big studs. The 8 big studs are lock tited in. Apply heat to the cases and studs, not much just enough to release the thread locker, Unscrew the studs.
Use a tap and die to clean the studs and the holes in the cases.
Now screw the studs in and snug with a straight blade screwdriver. Assemble the engine, install in the frame.
Now if you need to work on the engine you remove all the head bolts and nuts. Use a straight screw driver to unscrew the studs. Now you can lift off the rocker box, head and cylinders.
