Can a three pin flasher be swapped to a two pin flasher

I am rewiring my bike and am up to the auxillary circuit. I want to know if a two pin flasher unit can be used in place of the original three pin? Reason being I am doing the wiring from scratch and following a very simple diagram and when I use the original the fuse keeps blowing. I think it is because the third wire is not being used.

Yes, brown wire (switched 12V) to X and brown/white wire (to bar control) to L terminal. A 552 works well with stock signals. If you use LED's you need a flasher that is compatible with them. You lose your self canceling function with the two pin flasher but thats a good thing.
