I seem to remember reading somewhere about using different clutch springs. They were color-coded. "Blue" were stock, "Green" were heavy duty or something like that.
Someone mentioned staggering them.

Also, I heard that the aftermarket friction plates that are available now are a little thin. It was mentioned you could mod the '80+ engines to accept 7 discs to make up for it.

School me on the springs. And what's the correct thickness for friction plates?

I use 3 of mikes heavier springs and 3 originals....staggered......manual should show thickness and the earilier clutchs seem to work much better in my 80.......

- 650central sells for all clutches at around 10 percent plus strength
ferodo...1.640in
vesrah...1.835
barnett..1.50
- mikexs sells a set of hp springs too

- early plates were 3.5mm x 6 and had rubber rings between them...from TXA this changed to 3.0mm x 7...from SE this changed to 3.0mm x 6 plus a dampening mechanism
- the 7 plate clutches had a reputation for breaking the springs in the primary gear
- all clutches are interchangeable as complete units-dont put parts of one type into another
