Considering a backup ignition system on my 77XS650 for a long trip

Going back to your original question - the points system is easy to diagnose in the field and you can carry a spare coil, plug wire & cap, points & condenser in a small bag. The early charging system with its separate regulator/rectifier can be a little suspect. MikesXS has a modern combination unit to replace those 2 old pieces and I have used that with success. A spare would fit in your bag. That just leaves the rotor which is a little heavy, but not impossible along with the small pulling tool. Have a fun trip.

GO POINTS, cheap and easy!
Don't tell the missus that. Shiny, sparkly, and oooh! light as a feather never lets me down. :D
