Crankcase breather

Yeah, vacuum can be very strong. I've seen fuel tanks collapsed that weren't properly vented. Can only imagine what this could do to a seal. XJ, check out Mc MasterCarr for thin walled/oil resistant hose. I think it's Tygon? That's what I have for fuel line. Nice and flexy, gas/oil resistant.

I got my hose at Mike's. I read some where that Honda has it in several sizes.
The vaccum created by the brake valve isn't very strong.
From what I have read the crank case vacumm helps seal the rings. This helps the engine perform better. It can also help leaky seals and gaskets not leak.

Anyone know if the dual breather can be replaced with a single? Stock airbox/carbs have been removed & I'd rather not have to use two breather filters.

I ended up using 3/8" ID fuel line. It's resistant to oil and the OD is narrow enough that it doesn't cause a problem with my line from the tank to the carbs. Put some spit on the fittings and the hose will stretch enough to go on and not need a clamp.

I'm running a breather on the right side and a cap plug on the other side. Seems to have worked fine all summer.

I cut my breather tube to about 2" in length then put a single cap on that line. She's running pretty good so far as crankcase ventilation goes...my problem is related to another issue altogether.

JCthrills Yes either breatherbox can be used. My 75 had a two nipple breather, I now run a single nipple breather. I have about 1 1/2" of hose on the nipple with a brake booster valve plugged in with a bout 18" of 3/8 gas line from the valve down behind the engine and to the right side of the frame so any oil that may drip out won't get on the tire.

Sorry if this is a hijacking in progress but where can I get the actual crank case "cover" ? Mines broken like there is just a whole in that cover , nothing there any more o hook up a breather ??

Old thread, no hijacking.

Check ebay, I believe you can find a bunch on there. I don't believe they're being remade.

I would like to switch my breather from a double nipple to a single, I have both, but do I need a gasket?

Like my life, it alternately blows and sucks. Without this when the pistons go up and down it would create a major crankcase vacuum/pressure cycle that would result in the end of the space/time continuum as we know it. And wouldn't that be bad.

That was the funniest ass comment/quote that I have read anywhere on this site "Good Job"
Ill be laughing at that one for awhile....

What type of crankcase breathing do racers use? I know I have seen some pics of what I assumed were crankcase breathers coming out of the lower case, but don't know how they work. The original is a PITA working around the carbs, Anybody?

Here is one from Mikes XS that I use on my dirttracker and some photos of a new one from Mikes XS that will get installed on the new dirttracker.
It was a dual outlet breather but I sawed it off and pressed out the tube enough for the breather tube to be clamped on. I like these little units, they work good and look good.

Great looking bike! I thought about using a newer single outlet, but your method opens it up quite a bit. Have you ever seen a breather system other than the stock location?

Bryan,
Do you have a catch bottle on the other end of that tube?
I'm using a cheap auto parts store PCV valve and it still mists some oil. it's not pointing at my swingarm, so it just makes a little mess. Not too big a deal, but not much better than the no-valve setup I had before.
Thanks,
Tony
