Don’t try this at home.

I remember getting mercury amalgam fillings in th 60s. The dental nurse at school would mix together mercury and copper(????), grind it with a mortar and pestle and heat it over a small meths burner. The floor was dusted with sulfur (probably sulfur + calcium hydroxide) especially in the areas where mercury could accumulate (cornors, cracks and gaps between floor tiles). I do not have any of those fillings left, they fell out with my childhood teeth. Of course we did not get injections prior to drilling then. But thankfully all the treadmill operated drills were replaced with electric in the 50s - does anyone remember these? What did they feel like?
