Hi all, just got my first xs the other day and I'm still getting to know it. It's a huge mess and because of that I think I'm not going to feel bad turning it into a brat or a scrambler build. The PO was trying to turn it into a street tracker and it's far from original.

So far I've discovered the frame is a 1980, motor is from a 73 XT based on the number (S650-207763) and it's running TCI ignition but the points were left over. I've downloaded a manual and I'm still sussing out the wiring and trying to determine if the TCI stuff is all there cause I'd like to use it if possible.

Anyone know if this is an Omar's tank? It's super cool and I would like to run it but I think it's unsealed. Anyone have an recommendations on what to use to seal? It will be a street bike and I will be using gas with ethenol so I'm kind of worried about using a glass tank based on the mixed reviews I've read.

Haven't had a lot of time at the shop but was able to confirm that I have all the TCI parts. Not sure any of them work but they are there. Also confirmed that wires do indeed exist. Not sure if they are correct but I found a nice diagram on the site so I'll be making sure everything is ran correctly and I will be cleaning things up, replacing sketch connections and re-running any wires with splices. I plan on using little to no electrical tape unlike the PO.

Ordered a mikuni kit from Mike's since the bike didn't come with carbs or intake manis.

If all goes well and the ignition stuffs is up to spec I'm going to try and get in running the next couple of days.

I probably wouldn't run the tank. I've heard too many horror stories about sealer. Looks like Omar's or Gopher Glass. Just my opinion. Good luck.

I would line the tank with Caswell epoxy and run it. There has been only one Caswell failure reported on this forum and it broke free rather than dissolved. So, no carburetor/engine contamination. I have seen no other failure reports anywhere. Do your due diligence.

Unfortunately they are out of stock on their site. I've been checking for a while now. The back order date went from July 18 to Oct so either people bought them all up in a day or so or they're having trouble getting material.

I've had great results with POR15 tank sealer on steel tanks. Not sure how it would work in a 'glass tank.

POR15 is a solvent based product. I have no experience with it and I’m not sure whether or not it’s recommended for fiberglass. Caswell OTOH, is an epoxy product and I’m pretty sure it’s recommended for fiberglass tanks.

There is a lot of skittishness about tank liners on this board. Much is for good reason.

The rumor in the auto paint and body field is that there is a resin shortage.

Had a little time today to get to the shop try and get the 650 running. After being pretty sure the ignition wiring was correct I installed the new carbs and new battery and tried to see if it would fire. E-start wasn't working. Not turning and no solenoid clicking so resorted to kicking. No dice. Pulled plugs to see if I had spark. On both plugs it sparked like once or twice really randomly and didn't fire again after that. The red and orange wires on coil was getting power but is it supposed to be constant 12v? I would have thought they only get power when its supposed to spark. Then again I only know that a coil is supposed to do, not how its done exactly.

Anyways didn't have high hopes of getting it running. Didn't have much time. Going to go back and double check wiring or maybe just rewire the whole thing. There was some meh splicing and stuff that I didn't appreciate. Going to test the coil/wires and replace the plugs because they were ratty.

Going to do a little bit of studying to see how to test the individual components in the ignition system to see if I can sus anything out.

As always any help is welcomed. Hope everyone is well.

I sure hope that tank isn’t professionally made, that is some hack job fiberglass work on the bottom.

There has been a resin shortage since Covid.

Build surfboards with it everyday.

A 55 gallon drum went from 900 bucks to about 2800.

On top of that, suppliers who couldn’t get the regular raw materials started to substitute them without making it known to the end user - this has caused all sorts of stability/known outcomes of work problems. Resins don’t play the same way they used to and I know quite a few people who had big problems (myself included lost a 10k project to defective gloss resin) on some expensive projects.

I've watched my favorite clear, PPG Global, go from $435 for 6 qts sprayable to just under $1K. Evercoat Rage Ultra body filler. $40 to $85 a gallon and PPG CRE Epoxy Primer from $125 to $185 per 6Qt kit since 2021.

Yeah, it’s all gone through the roof.

Crazy thing is, at least here in CA where I am, NOTHING has slowed down.

I am quite possibly in a bubble, but people keep spending.

Ditto for me. I work on vintage cars, mostly Porsche, Corvette etc. and most of my customers are pretty well to do. There aren't many people willing to do what I do so at 65, I have more than enough work.
