Early vs. Late Spoked Front Hubs

Hey guys,

I'm converting from mags to spokes. I'm having some new excel rims laced to stock hubs.
I have two front hubs, one is late style (with the rotor holes drilled thru and the plastic left side cover), the other is an early style (with the chrome metal left side cover). I didn't get any spacers with the hubs and the bearings are out. The late style hub is larger. The late style hub is wider than the early hub. I have '78 forks. What is required to use the early hub on my late forks? Did the early hubs use different spacers? Are late forks wider than early forks?

The wheels aren't built yet. I'm sending the hubs to buchanan's to be laced to 18" excel mx rims. They will drill the rims, cut the spokes, and lace up the wheels. I'm trying to figure out the spacers before I send them to powder coat. Can early front hubs (wheels) be used in late forks using stock spacers?

The idea is to use the narrower early hub on the front and the wider late hub on the rear.
