how big should the oillines be for a oil cooler/filter setup? will the return be big enough?

it needs some cleaning up (for the looks) i think at the return thingy.
so would it be better to make the return bigger?

Same size, as it's not really a 'return'. after cooling with that set-up it goes on to lubricate the engine. A true return would go to the sump area.
the same size so the pressure does not drop.

I like the way you did the return line. Going in the side is a clever aproach.
I'm using 3/8 id hose. It should be plenty. If you look in the side cover that hole about 1/4 inch is where the oil goes into the engine.
You can also plumb in an external oil filter before it goes to the cooler. A spin on filter will catch finer particles than the stock screens.
