fender differences

Hey all, just wondering -- it appears that a rear fender off of a "special" is shorter in length than those off of a standard bike. We are looking at fender options for our cafe build -- the 1975 rear fender we have is way too "long" -- am I correct in seeing that one off a special is shorter in comparison? They almost look "bobbed"?

From what you just said I went out with my tape and measured the fenders on my 75 and 81. The 75 measured straight from where it mounts under the turn signal to the back of the fender is about 12 inches. Measured the same on the 81 and it is about 9 1/2 inches.
The difference may not be that much because the 81 turns are mounted about an inch farther back than the 75.
A better way to tellwould be to have one of each side by side.
