front fork oil capacity for 1974 xs 650

By the book or the best way? My Clymer on page the page just before page 1, 5.4 oz, on page 157 it calls for 4.25 oz.
The right way is to remove the fork caps, pull the springs, collapse the forks completely. Now fill to 6 inches down from the top of the tubes where the caps screw in.
Adding a bit extra and using a small tube or hose even. mark the tube or hose 6 inches from the end. With the mark at the top of the tube use a turkey baster or some other source of vaccum to draw the extra oil back out.
They make tools just for this. I used a hose like I built my yardstick manometer out of. !2 feet of 1/8 inch clear hose. This long I just sucked on the hose to draw the oil out.
Once you get the oil in, lift the front end to extend the forks and reinstall the springs and caps.
