Generator questions

Due to financial constraints I need to use the old generator on my 79 re-build.
I am stripping the engine and the rotor and stator look to be in pretty poor condition. I will clean them up with electra clean but need to test them before I re-fit them. Does anyone have a range of tests and results for the rotor and stator so I can check all is okay.
Previous owner cut the plug off of the wiring. Can anyone tell me the best way to ensure all connections are correct.
