So I'm going to try to get my dad's XS650 back on the road, last time it had a plate was 1988 - hoping you guys can point me in the right direction:thumbsup:

Motor turns over, next on the list is to get a battery

I'm almost finished restoring 1981 XS650 Special, (like you the last sticker was 1987) Its been a long journey, so don't rush the work, don't take short cuts. I soak the motor with penetrating oil (sprayed in spark plug holes) and left seat for awhile, then turned by hand, after that changed oil, replace sump filter and side oil filter, and make sure you go through ALL the wiring, unplugging electric connections clean and use dielectric grease on each. Replace the brake even if they look good, I've done a lot to this point. Make a list of what you need to do and check off what you have already done, this is just the beginning of thing I did, the guys here will add more to the list, Good Luck and BTW Welcome.

Welcome to the forum, rpenterics.

That looks to be an early 72-73, XS2 or TX650. Vintage stuff, a little more difficult to find parts.
Extended front, appears to have the better tweak bar...

Up in the XS650 TECH section there are many topics that deal with what to do to a bike that has sat for a few years to get it running again.
A new battery is a good start. These bikes won't run without a good one.

Checked last night: S650-128505
So a '72 XS2 - how much more difficult to find parts?

What's the best way to clean out a gas tank?

I post some more pictures when I get it out and give it a bath.

I would say, in order of difficulty,
Body/trim parts first, like seat, fuel tank, sidecovers, fenders, headlight parts, instruments, handlebar controls.
Next would be fuel system parts, like petcocks and carbs.
Next would be front braking parts.
Lastly, crankshaft and rods.

What's the best way to clean out a gas tank?

There's numerous threads,

Made some progress this weekend. After an oil change, a new battery, and some wd40 she fired up like a champ :D

Now I need to get the gas tank cleaned up (stuck shut right now) and looks like i need to rebuild/replace most of the front brake system (fluid was all crystallized and waxy)

Welcome. The motor sounds good and no smoke. Should be on the road after the brakes and all the other things like the alternator charging the battery and the brushes might need to be replaced. All the information you need is here for you. You are off to a good start. Once you go over it you will have a great bike to ride.
