Handlebar clamping area diameter?

Handlebar shopping and the ones I am interested in are 7/8" bars, but the specs refer to a 1" clamping area width. You would think I would have noticed by now, but are stock bars on a Special 1 inch at the clamps? Do I have my head up my ass on this?

7/8 bars are what I ordered . I just put on the cb type bars from Mikes /Direct . I don't think they are 1" at the clamps .

The bars often have knurling where the risers clamp around the bars. The knurling improves the grip of the clamps on the bars. The 1 inch is how wide the knurling is.

That makes sense! I ordered the same brand for my SV and did not remember it being different. Guess I DID have my head up my ass!

No 7/8 bars fit in the clamps. 1 inch bars are found on way bigger bikes than our beloved xs650s.
