Headlight wiring configuration

I have a 77 xs650D and was wondering if all of the light and switch connections are supposed to be stuffed into the headlight bucket. I bought a new harness and factory handlebar switches and the leads are pretty long. Was curious if you could have some of the wires in connectors outside of it and the small bullets inside of the housing. Thanks.

Everything goes in. I have 2 with an LED power module (artfully shoved) in there also.

There's a diagram that shows it all from the front and the approximate position of everything and which hole they come into the bucket from, but I don't seem to have kept it.
