Hey everybody, Im working on rebuilding a 1973 tx650 engine and it seems most of the stuff I find says tx or xs and others are tx/xs. Im wondering what exactly is cross compatible. Mainly talking about engine seals and gaskets. but would be good to know about pistons and rings. they seems to be ok, just need a good cleaning. Also need a new cam chain. Any help would be really appreciated! thank you!

There are 2 engine types, 70-73 are referred to as 256 type, 74 and on are 447 types. cam chains are different between the 2. can chain tensioners had quite a few variations.

Your '73 should be a "256" type motor but the internal parts that differ from the "447" could have been changed (cam chain, cam & crank sprockets, rods, pistons). The "256" motor had a 34T sprocket on the cam and a 17T sprocket on the crank. It used a .315" pitch chain that was 102 links long. The "447" had a 36T sprocket on the cam and an 18T one on the crank. It's chain had a .306" pitch and was 106 links long. Count the number of teeth on your cam sprocket.

As far as gaskets and seals go, they should all be pretty much the same on your '73 compared to the later models.
