So I recently "finished" up my 1981 xs650 Chopper

It was running great and charging for two solid days I rode it all over. ran through about a tank and half.

The other night riding back home, the bike just shut off. Today I took a multimeter to the battery and it was only at 5.5 Volts. The bike still kicks over with the choke on but that's about it. Charging the battery as we speak, hoping the whole system is still charging when I test with the multi meter.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that might lead me in the right direction to solve this?

I know I should probably get a PMA systems but I'm not there yet $$$

Thanks!

Usually charging issues will show up as irregular running rather than light switch off. A short or broken wire somewhere?

Check your rotor, brushes, regulator to make sure they are working and make sure battery is good and holding a charge,it will loose charge if bad! Also a bad battery can cause regulator to go bad by overworking it!
