Hey guys,

Only asking this because when I DON'T plan my next move things go bad lol.

1977 with a worn starter gear. Have replacement from Mike's. Have removed clutch basket and am now staring at the outer gear which I need to take off to get to the #4gear and replace it and the accompanying spring.

I see a tiny retainer plate and clip that's holding the whole starter gear assembly onto the shaft. Do I just take some pliers and get the clip off and start pulling it apart one layer at a time? Does that kill the clip? I'd love to swap the gear and get this back together again without having to replace anything I may destroy in the process :)

Just need to know if there's a technique or a special tool I need. Thanks a bunch!

That's pretty much it. Remove the snap ring then all the parts behind it. Take note of the countersunk washer (#8) and the two half moon "clips" (#7) just under the snap ring. The "clips" fit into a groove in the shaft and the countersunk washer holds them in place. This "assembly" holds everything else on the shaft .....

Also, the drag clip (#3) included in the kit has been reported to be weak even when new. You might be better off re-bending your original following the tips here .....
