How to tighten shift arm lock nut

The lock nut on my shift arm eccentric screw keeps working loose. The engine is all back together so try as I might, I can't get a wrench in there without it hitting in 10 places and no room to tighten!

I'm at a point now where I don't see a lot of options. I can pull the shift shaft out so that the arm comes out and then I can get a wrench on the nut to tighten it. But if I do that, then I can't be sure it will still be in alignment when I put it back together.

Or should have it all been loctited so that it wouldn't keep spinning?

Or is the nut supposed to be just snug and the retainer tab for the nut supposed to hold it all solid? The only problem I see with this last thing is I can see tab moving left and right when I work the shifter.

Several threads on the star wheel and adjustment but I can't find anything in the manual where it addresses the installation of this particular &$*@** lock nut!! Will somebody please throw me a rope!

The clutch has to be removed to get access. Make the correct adjustment. Fully tighten the lock nut (sure, some blue lock-tite on the threads is a good idea). Bend over the locking tabs. The lock nut should not come loose by itself, the locking tabs are a backup. The locking tabs should not move....................isn't it keyed to a ridge on the engine casting? There is a picture in the thread "How the hell does the kick starter work"

Have the clutch pack out and everything, it's the drive shaft to the clutch that seems to be in the way of getting a wrench with leverage and the springs for the clutch arm that requires a wrench that is thin. Might look to see if I can grind down a crows foot.

I'm down with everything you suggested, its just that I can't seem to get that nut tight enough.

And I don't know if my tab has gotten worn out but with the nut a little loose the tab then seem to work itself loose from where it wraps the case. I thought about trying to replace the tab but haven't found anyplace selling them.
