Hey Everyone,

I'm wiring up the XS after installing Hugh's complete CDI kit. He has some instructions provided, but they are not proving to be 100% newbie proof...

I dont know how to wire this thing up without a starter motor. I ripped and plugged mine from the engine. Hugh's diagram just says "red white from relay 85 is to switched (+) battery (IE Key Toggle Ect)" What does the relay even do in this setup? his other wiring diagram uses a momentary switch without the relay and a capacitor.

What order do I put the key in with the wiring?? I would like to turn the key to the on position, Have the headlight and tail light turn on, and have the bike kick ready. Ideally have the whole thing on the switch so the bike can't be kicked on without the key. 'Ya know... to avoid it being stolen. I have a colorful drawing of what I have so far.

What the hell do I have to do to get this working right?

Alright I did some research and emailed hugh. I think I've got this. Anyone willing to double check my work and make sure I dont blow up my bike?

I'm hoping with this setup the main fuse and 10 amp fuse will protect my lights and expensive CDI.

THANKS!

I don’t really know how the wiring on his setup works but basically if you want everything controlled off the key then the 12v (+) feed to the relay and fuse box all need to be after the key. Kind of like in this photo. Then the only thing hot all the time is the ignition switch itself and the rectifier. So it shouldn’t kick over without the key. You can also wire in a “kill switch” between the coil 12v feed which would also prevent it from kicking over. I plan to do both for added security.
