I got a coil mounting bracket from Mike's.

to mount a coil like this

The coil mounting arms fit the coil perfectly. I thought the other side of the bracket would fit in the original coil mounting holes but they are not far enough apart. There is no note on Mike's product page about where to mount it. Am I missing something obvious. This is for a 78 Standard.

I decided hanging the coil from zip ties wasn't really a long-term solution. :)
Thanks!

I have mounted that same coil in the same location on two bikes now, a ‘72 and a ‘77.

Thanks a lot fella's I have some sheet aluminum in the garage that will do just fine ,.
I'll make one for each of the coils. Then on to the wiring . Sure appreciate the help.

Mailman, will that coil fit across the frame or does it rub against the tank.

It fits, you have to be careful with your measurements because you have to consider, not only the position of the coil, but leave room for the plug wires to exit from the side of the coil. After mounting it , I checked the clearance under the tank tunnel with a flash light and mirror, and it clears both sides by about 12mm.

Can these fit in that space, or is it a NO GO?

I assume the stock tank won't fit over this.

I checked this one and it does fit, but I don't recall what I had for space.

I would flip them 90° (up) so the plug wire exits from the top, or 180° so the plug wire exits towards the inside. Or, maybe some angle in between those two so the plug wire angles both up and in.

Space is at a premium here as there are other components in that area (flasher can, TS self-canceller). I added a tab to my coil bracket to hang the flasher can off of, and offset the bracket to move the coil as far forward as possible .....

To deal with the self-canceller being in the way, I simply bent it's mounting tab up and placed the unit on top of it instead of hanging off the bottom as it was originally .....
