Interchageable Parts - 1979 to a 1981

Hi I'm working on a 1981 XS650 and a guy I know has parts from a 1979 XS650, I was wondering if they would be interchangeable. I'm curious about the voltage regulator for the most part since mine isn't charging. What parts won't work and what ones will? Thanks for the help.

In '80 Yamaha went to solid state rectifier/regulator. Or you can check out the Radio Shack/Chrysler rec/reg mod for a lot less $$ and some sweat equidty.

Ithanx for the advice, im a newbie to fixing up bikes but other than engine parts is everything else transferrable?

Some yes, some no, some no but you can make it work. Depending on whats not working and which direction you want to go.
