Talked to Alto today they have "our" plates in stock, but in Europe. I tossed out a number, 200 plates or about 25 clutch conversions. This would resurrect the old ippytattoo 8 plate conversion. I talked to ippy about this before and he said go for it, he wouldn't jump through the hoops again. I put one in Madness and could not be happier. You need the 8 new (thinner) friction plates and one extra stock steel plate assuming your existing steels are good. I can prolly do about 15 sets from plates I have here, you can also order them new from Yamaha and maybe I can round some more up from flea bay or member stashes.
So round numbers about $80 to your door for 8 friction plates. please put your 2 cents in the poll and feel free to reply, good, bad, or MEH.
I think ippy installed or sold about 12 sets, he did sell out of what he.
I have not done it but Ippytattoo had done turned some later (80 up?) hubs to remove the "half plate shelf" and steel spring to make the 8 plate conversion. That might be something I could offer also.
    Here's ippy's previous thread. http://www.xs650.com/threads/alto-8-pack-clutch-kits.33399/#post-338934
These plates are not a big seller for Alto, they only had 7 plates total in the US, and no plans for a production run. They also fit some other Yamaha's and Suzuki GS1000's

When Roland Stuart rebuilt my clutch he told me to get him another plate. Go figure.

Can a 256 clutch be altered to use them? If so would it handle the horsepower of a 256 engine?

Ippy said 74-79 and the 80 up with the hub machining mod. Would have to look into the 256 motor clutches.

Mines a 256. Clutch pull seems a bit stiffer that before but that could be due to new springs.

I’d be in for one. I was disappointed when ippy disappeared and I missed the boat.

Green 256's didn't make enough HP to hurt themselves. It was the red and white ones that needed a better clutch.:gun:

I’d be in for one as I’m going to have to rebuild the clutch on my ‘74 anyway. Might as well do it right the first time.

Getting through a cheese log wall is a piece of "cake" unless it's reinforced with sausage logs.
I've always felt my 72 was special, that's why I still have it.
In the late 70's I had a horrible problem with clutch slippage at high RPMs. Come out of the hole great, about the time it hit 6500 in 4th the clutch would start slipping at 7000 it would let go. Took a while to get to the bottom of it. Will be interesting when I get that engine back in and running if the clutch is still good. Sitting for 30 + years shouldn't have hurt it. It looked OK when I had it apart last year.

Have 30 plus years in the transmission business and if these thinner friction plates are anything like thinner trans friction (They were made by Alto for the 700R4 and 4L60E trans), they'll eventually warp causing issues later on. But I'm in for the basket mod

About 8,000 miles on Madness (750) with this 8 plate clutch, no problems finding neutral. No slipping, smooth action. Couldn't keep the stock clutch from slipping even with stiffer springs. I don't always flog it, but it's been used hard.

Yes, need to find out a total delivered cost on the plates from europe, with time differences may be tomorrow or Monday.
With what I'm seeing here will most likely do this.

We run an alto 8 plate clutch in number 250. The clutch takes a beating every start and is still holding up well, although the plates have gone black.
I doubt you will have problems on a road bike with them.
I am interested dependent on price compared with Europe suppliers.
