Jim's 1980 SG Restoration. And Yeah.... A Few Mods.

    Hey Jim
    Here is the Accel Harley 140403S coil i fitted to my 79 SG. Almost a direct bolt on but had to space it a little bit back with the outlet lead just touching the tank. Had to get new 90° soft plug caps out of the coil. Also installed copper wires not the 8.8mm graphite that came with it but i had spares. I know not to use resistor caps and plugs but i do.

    Thanks Ozboy. That's one of the HD coils I've been looking at.
    Damn... there's a lot more options out there than I imagined.

    I've got about 225-250 miles on her now. You can't tell it from the speedo... which works whenever it feels like it. I've got 3 or 4 down in the basement... so one of these days I'll clean one up and replace it. For now I'm just using my phone.

    So anyway.....I went ahead and looked everything over. One of the exhaust valves had loosened up a thou or two. Readjusted. The cam chain loosened up a lot.... like 3-4MM. Readjusted. Everything else is just where I want it. Oil still looks brand new... no sparkles, so I'll prolly go to 500 mi. before I change it. Still debating on the coil and fwd. pegs.
    On Bob's recommendation, I ordered the Givi A-603 Windshield from Revzilla last week. It arrived today... so I installed it. Rode behind it for about an hour and it's pretty much how Bob described it in his Givi Review. I'm more than happy with it.
    Decided it was time for a good wash and some photo's....

    I'd love to take a stethoscope reading from your front 2 guide bolts, and compare with others...

    It appears you haven't changed the spark plug caps from stock? I'd be doing that like right now, lol. The originals can and do go bad. Their resistance begins to climb and eventually that starts choking off the spark. Maybe that's happening with yours when they get hot? I'd try new caps before a new coil, maybe it will fix your issue.

    I'm just starting in on the process of adapting some Honda MP08 coils for me and my buddy. Reasons are as mentioned - cost, durability, and the ability to change plug wires. Neither of us seem to be having any issues with our current coils, we just want to try these. Once done, I will report on their mounting and function.

    The sputtering was only when the bike wasn't charging (I believe)... hot or cold didn't matter. And hasn't happened since changing the reg/rec. My experience rebuilding rotors has made one thing very apparent... the insulation on the copper wire is past it's lifespan. That's why the rotors are breaking down. Coils are built the same way; insulated copper wire wrapped around an iron core... and the same 40 yrs old. Although it's working just fine right now, I'm not trusting it for the reasons mentioned. As soon as my wishy washy mind decides which coil to use, it'll get replaced... along with the caps. They'll be just fine 'till then. ;)

    Here's how I did mine. Crazy drilling, but I was in a git 'er done mood. Works fine. The metal strip is hardware store standard stock that comes in about 3' lengths. Between the front coil mount and the frame is a washer the same thickness as the metal strip. I ground away just a small amount of a gusset to clear the bottom tower. Purplezinger, who used this coil first, had a more complicated way of mounting it.

    I plan on mounting the new coil like the original - plug wires exiting out the rear and in a horizontal plane. It will require angle mounting brackets to flip it that 90°, but that's fine. I would have to make some sort of mount adapters anyway because of the MP08's smaller size.
