I have a clearance problem with the kick starter on my XS2. I'm running a Deukevic 2 into 1 exhaust. I really like the looks and sound of the exhaust. Problem is I can't use the kick starter. Clearance problem. I never realized there were different kick starters for for the 650s. Mine is below.

This one has a bit of offset at the knuckle. I'm guessing about an inch or so.

This one has the offset in the bend. Just guessing it looks to be more than an inch and a half.

Does anyone know for sure how much difference there is in the offsets for mine? I need about an inch and a half or so.

I am not able to offer a measurement on the offsets but I do know that Brassneck fitted a kickstarter from an RD400 on his XS650 to work around a non-folding foot peg on a rearset control system - and it works fine.

I’d guess that the geometry problem that he had to address would be similar to your exhaust clearance issue - AND - the splines on the kick starter fitted the shaft on the XS650 engine. He has a great album on the Forum, but here is photo of his beautiful bike.

Solved my clearance issue. Below are 3 kickers. The one on the left is my original, middle one is from a mid 70s 650 and the one on the right is from a XT500. The mid 70s kicker has an inch of offset compared to my original. On the bike it was better but it did rub a little on the exhaust.

I ordered a XT500 kicker from E-Bay. Interestingly it is the same part number as a XS650 kicker.

It's not as heavy duty as my original. The splines are the same. The shaft for the kicker is 2mm smaller.

Thought I would give it a try. Looks OK.

And works much better. Plenty of clearance for the pipe.

Stroked her through a few times, turned the gas on, set chock and turned ignition on. One kick and it was running. First time I have kicked started it since the mid 80s.:woowoo:

Looks great GLJ - and that offset helps you NOT bark your right knee on the danged sidecover every time you kick it.

Before I got Lucille's electric starter working well, I had a big purple bruise on the inside of my right knee everytime I rode the bike.

After I posted the pic I ordered a new one from Partzilla. The one I got from E-Bay was a bit rusty in places.

Spot on thanks mate appreciated. I think I've found one on yambits but the parts number different it's 1T1-15611-00

If it's like what they show in the pic it may not work for you. It says it's a reproduction. Looks a lot like an early kicker. You might want to double check with them and see if they can send a pic of what you will actually get.

Cheers. I've gone on partzilla and theres a number of the same kickers as yours with different part numbers and one has that same part number as the one on yambits. But I will get in touch them like you say and ask for photos

I think Yamaha at some stage combined the different levers under one part number, the original TT/XT500 lever doesn’t have any offset like the XS and SR ones, there are after market ones made for SR400s with rearsets that have a bigger dogleg in them, get em from webike japan, same spline as XS650.
